“Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. It is a bulwark against poverty, and a building block of development, an essential complement to investments in roads, dams, clinics and factories. Literacy is a platform for democratization, and a vehicle for the promotion of cultural and national identity. Especially for girls and women, it is an agent of family health and nutrition. For everyone, everywhere, literacy is, along with education in general, a basic human right…. Literacy is, finally, the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realize his or her full potential.”
― Kofi Annan
If you were following along last year, Passports with Purpose (PwP) may sound familiar. Read more about PwP and last year’s fundraiser here. We ended up being able to raise $25,000 for Sustainable Harvest International, enough to feed five families in Honduras! If you didn’t have a chance to participate before, now is your chance!
The Incredible Partnership With Worldreader
This year, Passports with Purpose has partnered with Worldreader to bring 50 digital readers to five libraries in Kenya. These readers will have fiction and nonfiction books suited for readers of all ages and will be available in English and Swahili, and they will also have Kenyan textbooks. These e-readers will provide approximately 6,250 children, teachers, and parents with access to over 50,000 books. How awesome is that?!
As if they couldn’t get any better, Worldreader also provides training to librarians and they even help keep the readers charged when electricity is scare with a special solar solution.
Every dollar raised will help bring another book to a Kenyan library. For all you book lovers, think about how many books we could buy together!
