The Global Couple
Travel Moments:
Petra and Shaun of The Global Couple
After watching a blazing sunset on top of Mandalay Hill in Myanmar, we were walking down the covered stairway in the dark. There were no lights on and it was quite difficult to see. Suddenly we heard footsteps rushing up behind us, and we assumed the worst – that someone was about to mug us. We were too scared to turn around, so we just hurried down the stairs. The footsteps kept catching up to us and we were almost running. Then we heard whispering behind us, and suddenly a voice piped up saying “Can you slow down please?” We wheeled around and four adolescent boys were right behind us! They had been trying to catch up with us to overhear us speaking English. We ended up chatting with them the rest of the way down the stairs. It turned out that the boys go to Mandalay Hill every evening to strike up conversations with travellers so they can improve their English to get jobs in the tourism industry. It was inspiring to hear how determined they are to get good jobs and bring money home for their families. They were so lovely and genuine that we were quite embarrassed to have mistaken them for muggers!
