Travel Moments: David of Guerrilla Gallivanter

One of my favorite travel moments was hopping a moving train in the Canadian Rockies of Banff, Alberta. I was on a road trip with two friends, and while they ate lunch in town, I had to walk about 45minutes outside of town to meet someone. As I was walking back to town, I heard a train coming.

It was moving so fast that at first, I didn’t even consider hopping it a possibility. Without thinking further, I started sprinting. Adrenaline and fear combined, I was side by side with the train, and my hand reached out to grab a bar and I lifted myself onto the train. Surrounded by the blue lagoons and looming peaks of the Rockies, and fueled by adrenaline and excitement, I screamed in victory and knew I would never forget doing that.

That moment taught me that to make those memories and milestones, you have to challenge yourself and confront your fears. You will never forget doing something if it scares you, and if traveling is about learning and creating memories, there’s no better time to confront your fear than when you’re traveling. If you’re too scared to try new things, stay at home.
